Earlier this year, while I was on one of my many trips to Saudi Arabia, I had an unusual experience.
As we all know, a lot of incredible transformation is happening there, and it's a fascinating place to work and visit.
One day, I was in an Uber when I noticed the driver had a crutch on the passenger seat. I also saw that he had some sort of mechanical support system on his leg, so I asked if he had a broken leg.
He said yes, it was from an accident he had in 2015. He was studying in Colorado at the time, but he had returned to his country to visit family. During that trip, he was run over by a car.
He lost consciousness and was in a coma for five years. He was transferred to a hospital in the Czech Republic, where he remained until early 2020.
When he woke up, his family was there in the room. He didn't recognize them immediately, but once he started to become aware of what had happened, he noticed they were all wearing masks. He wondered why, and they kept saying, "COVID, COVID, COVID." He had no idea what they were talking about.
A bit later, when he was back on his feet and back in his home country, he could hardly recognize it. The prices had shot up to the same level as in Colorado, where he had been living before. Amazingly, women were now driving cars, and the shopping malls were full of people—singles and married couples alike. There were new developments everywhere. The country had changed completely.
I thought to myself, "That would make a fantastic screenplay for a film!"
It is one of those wonderful experiences you have when you travel and meet people. For me, hearing stories like this is the best part of traveling.
They are always inspiring and help you appreciate the diverse world we live in.
Enjoy your summer, stay curious, and be open to people and adventure.
