How Can You Increase Productivity By 50%?
Updated: Dec 22, 2020
Paul J. Zak shares the conclusions of his research on Trust & Performance in the article 'The Neuroscience of Trust' published in HBR - Jan-Feb 2017).
Compared with people at low-trust companies, people at high-trust companies report 74% less stress, 106% more energy at work, 50% higher productivity, 13% fewer sick days, 76% more engagement, 29% more satisfaction with their lives, 40% less burnout.
But how do you create trust between two individuals? He started from the observation, that in rodents a brain chemical called oxytocin had been shown to signal that another animal was safe to approach. He embarked on decade-long research to establish a parallel with humans.
This led to identifying 8 managerial practices to build a high-trust organization:
1 - Recognize excellence.
2 - Induce “challenge stress.”
3 - Give people discretion in how they do their work.
4 - Enable job crafting.
5 - Share information broadly.
6 - Intentionally build relationships.
7 - Facilitate whole-person growth.
8 - Show vulnerability.
